Hand-picked by Composer Joshua, it was his job to watch the Reapers and Players to make sure they all followed Joshua’s rules as well as carry out his requests for special items. It wasn’t a job he minded at all, though. Sanae and Joshua had developed a deep trust between them during their time working together in the UG, especially since Joshua was the only person who knew he was the Producer- and an Angel.

In order to keep a better eye on the goings-on of Shibuya, he set up a café- WildKat- and assumed the mantle of CAT, a graffiti artist with the motto of "do what you want, when you want, where you want". It caught on quickly; almost everyone in Shibuya had either seen his art or heard of him. This was because his art was more than art. They’re embedded with command codes to act as mass imprinting mediums. “Enjoy the moment more.” “Gather.” These were his command codes.

He watched and protected the Players throughout the Game… until Neku arrived, and the battle between Composer and Conductor began.

Starting a secret report, he detailed all he knew about the rules of this special Game even though the risk of him remaining in the UG and writing them could be fatal. The fate of Shibuya hung on the outcome, as Joshua planned on destroying it. However, he wasn’t allowed to be in charge of the Game and had to leave- something that had never been done before in the history of the Game. After securing a pin for the Composer, Sanae ensured he was tuned into the UG and began looking for the proxy Joshua had chosen to play the Game for him.

By Day 2 of the first week, he had figured it out. Neku Sakuraba was the proxy; a closed-in, antisocial boy with deep emotional confusion. Sanae gave him a Harmonizer Pin and encouraged him to open up and work with his partner. It was the only way Neku would be able to stabilize his Soul and grow, as well as a huge factor in Shibuya’s survival.

As Days went by, he continued to create reports and even kept in contact with Joshua, though he was forbidden from giving him any information so the Game would stay even and fair. The contact was solely for the Composer to request items and the only thing Sanae could do was create and deliver them- nothing more.

When Shiki freed herself from her envy of Eri, Joshua became more confident in Neku’s ability to progress and win on Day 7. In his eyes, Neku played an invaluable part in Shiki’s growth and, by helping her, he broke free of his self-obsessed mindset. As predicted, Neku and Shiki won, though the Player Beat was less fortunate. His partner had been Erased saving him from a surprise Noise attack. With only a handful of minutes left to live, Sanae took him back to WildKat and gave him a pin with the Imagination needed to produce Noise, as well as an imprint on how to use it. While writing one of his reports, though, Beat escaped. Sanae had an idea of why Beat had been so interested in Noise, but said nothing. What he gave the Player would have no effect on the Game.

During Week 2, Joshua resurfaced, younger in appearance and tuned in to the UG, reducing his power and making him harder to find. He was to be Neku’s partner for the week, though Neku had won back his memory from the last Game, bringing with it his self-obession. Joshua and Neku didn’t get along right away, and Sanae was concerned this would erase all the progress Neku had made last Week. The strain of being around the Composer’s high vibe could also cause his Soul to destabilize. It was going to be a risky Week.

Sanae eventually revealed the secret of creating Taboo Noise to the GM of Week 2, Sho Minamimoto. Doing so was a crime to Angels and Sanae was given the stigma of Fallen Angel for his actions, though he accepted it for the good of Shibuya. He also told Sho about Joshua’s RG identity. It was all with good intent that he did these things; he had to.

Meeting with Composer and proxy again, he provided Joshua with a requested upgrade for his phone that would allow him to follow the Conductor’s Imagination so he could figure out his strategy. Neku was very wary of Joshua and strained almost past the breaking point. The only thing that kept him going was his entry fee. Later, they returned and the tracker was upgraded to allow him to find the Shibuya River.

The pins he’d made for Joshua during the very start of the first Week- Red Skull Pins- were distributing gradually, causing anyone wearing them to be overcome by the Conductor’s will. In the meantime, Sanae corrected an error in Minamimoto’s Taboo Noise refinery sigil after the Reaper had been Erased. Joshua faked being Erased as well, though Sanae knew he was safe inside a parallel world. …He just didn’t know which one.

When the final Week began, the Conducter delt a very underhanded blow: the Player count would be just one. Neku would be partnerless, and thus, Erased within minutes. Thankfully, Beat- as a Reaper- appeared and formed a pact with Neku to save him. Beat would guide Neku to the Shibuya River in time; Sanae didn’t have to now. Though, he still couldn’t relax just yet.

The Red Skull Pins had spread to almost all of Shibuya, and the GM of the week was hiding within Beat’s shadow, waiting for the pair to find her. Minamimoto also managed to return during Day 5, through the sigil Sanae fixed for him. Aware that Joshua frequently visited Sanae’s café, Sho raided the WildKat. He missed the crucial thing Sanae left behind- the keypin for the wall blocking the Shibuya River. Having found the parallel world Joshua left to, Sanae set out to find him, secure that the keypin would provide the guidance Beat and Neku needed until he could return with Joshua and end the Game.

As he went to enter the parallel world, though, he found himself in a place he’d been unaware of until then. It wasn’t Shibuya, or any other plane. It was a white room in a white building- and his Composer was nowhere in sight.
